Gamification and Open Badges: a Fun Way to Train Staff

Engaging

However, rewarding your staff in such a way can be a lot more effective than you think. Remember – adults are as likely as younger people (albeit maybe slightly less so) to become addicted to games. So, taking elements of game playing and applying it to your employees’ learning can engage them more in training and non-certified courses. In fact, a lot of the businesses we’ve discussed gamification with are now using these awards to track internal compliance.

Open Badges

If your business has its own LMS, this can be used to deliver game-based learning and training. Totara LMS now supports a ‘reward’ system called Open Badges. Once an employee has undertaken training or learning via the LMS, they can be set a quiz to test their knowledge on the subject. If they score above a certain mark (set by you) it can trigger a ‘badge’ to be awarded to them.

In practice you could use this to ensure everyone has completed the training you have set them. The staff complete the quiz and once they earn the badge they can share this with Personnel through their Open Backpack settings. This means your Personnel department has an easy way of tracking all the compliance modules that have been completed. Your employees, on the other hand, will feel proud of the ‘badge’ they have earned – and the fact that they can display this anywhere online!
